The higher acid content in crude produced from hydraulic fracturing requires oil refineries to increase use of nitrogen-containing corrosion inhibitors. This makes it more challenging for the wastewater treatment systems to meet effluent ammonia limits.
An oil refinery on the Gulf Coast was experiencing repeated ammonia excursions requiring storage and reprocessing of wastewater at considerable expense.
