Peterborough, Ontario WavTexTM Installation

Entex’s WavTex IFAS Installation for Peterborough, Ontario was featured in the Spring 2022 Edition of Influents, the official publication of the Water Environment Association of Ontario (WEAO). Complementing the issue’s theme of Innovative and Alternate Treatment Technologies, the article describes a fixed-film WavTex system as an alternate treatment approach from the plant’s previous IFAS configuration consisting of suspended MBBR media.

The article, co-authored by R.V. Anderson engineers, Peterborough plant personnel, and Entex details the Operation and Maintenance issues that the WWTP was facing with the old MBBR media, 5 alternate technologies that were considered for the plant upgrade, and the rationale behind choosing the WavTex IFAS system for the retrofit. Of these O&M issues, media breakage and washout were most impactful on the poor performance of the old IFAS configuration. This will be a non-issue with the WavTex system as the EnTextile media sheets in the WavTex modules have a resilient, flexible structure with one edge firmly tethered to the support modules.

The Peterborough WWTP has a rated capacity of 18 MGD with effluent total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) limits of 2.98 mg/L (summer) and 5.0 mg/L (winter). A total of 32 WavTex modules (8 per train) were installed in the aerated tanks to match the initial design capacity of the MBBR system. The final train was brought online in December of 2021. Since then, the effluent TAN values have been exceeding design expectations. The article touches on the expedited WavTex installation as well as the initial performance of the plant including details of the 6-month process validation period which will be concluding this month, June 2022.

The magazine issue will be distributed at the 2022 WEAO Technical Symposium and OPCEA Exhibition. It is also published on the WEAO website and can be found below:
